Calcutta Debating Circle announced “UK-India debate tour”

First ever public speaking representation from Kolkata to London From 13th– 15th March 2017

 Kolkata, 7th March 2017: Calcutta Debating Circle announced their first ever public speaking representation from Kolkata to London named “UK-India Debate Tour” today. The conference took place at the premises of Calcutta Club which was addressed by Dr. Kunal Sarkar, President of CDC & Senior Vice Chairman, Director and Head of Cardiac Surgery, Medica Super specialty Hospital; Dr. Sandip Chatterjee, Trustee of CDC & Academic Co-ordinator at Park Clinic, Kolkata and Professor and Head of Neurosurgery of VIMS, Kolkata, Mr. Pradeep Gooptu, Trustee of CDC & Founder & team leader of the think-tank Bengal Initiative, its research, writing & publishing wing; Ms. Swati Gautam, Entrepreneur & Executive Member of CDC; Mr. Shankar Ramalingam, Executive Member of CDC & Director of Megaa Modal Pvt. Ltd.

 The “UK –India debate Tour” would take place from 13th -15th March 2017 in London, U.K. The public speaking would be represented by four speakers from Calcutta debating circle Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Mr. Pradeep Gooptu along with Students of Scottish Church College & Presidency University, Soumasekhar Gangopadhyay and Moyuree Mukherjee

 Speaking on the occasion Mr. Kunal Sarkar, President of Calcutta Debating Circle said, “Calcutta Debating Circle” (CDC) has encouraged effective public speaking amongst students and the general community over the last six years. The international exhibition debate and student event has been one of the most prominent debating events of our country. We are glad that CDC debaters have been invited to speak in debates in London, UK. We hope to do our city proud.”

Profile of the Speakers from CDC going to London:

 

Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman, Director and Head of Cardiac Surgery at Medica Superspecialty Hospital. He practices coronary surgery as his pursuance of passion. He is intimately associated with the academic activities of IACTS and EACTS; also aspires to bring the South Asian nations together in the South Asian Forum of Cardiothoracic Surgeons. A passionate debater, orator and writer, Dr. Sarkar is the President of the Calcutta Debating Circle (CDC), and chairs the largest live debate in India during Calcutta’s Festival of the Spoken Word’.

Mr. Pradeep Gooptu is a trustee of the Calcutta Debating Circle and also the founder & team leader of the think-tank Bengal Initiative & its research, writing & publishing wing. He is the Author of multiple books, the latest being ‘ATITHI DEVO BHAVA- The Indian Odyssey’ (an internationally circulated volume, published by FHRAI & Incredible India campaign, at the global summit in Bhuvaneswar in October2015. He is the Author of over 500 editorials and articles in ‘The Economic Times’ & ‘Business Standard’ newspapers. In addition he is the Advisory editor of the city urban heritage and adventure magazine, ‘Wheels’.

Mr. Soumasekhar Gangopadhyay is an English Honours student from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. He is the recipient of the Gold Medal at the Jadavpur University International Relations Scholastic Conclave. He was the winner of the Intervarsity Challenge Debate in Kolkata and is presently a member of the Bose Legacy Foundation initiative. Being an avid debater, he has regularly participated in several debates since school winning the SLOBA Debate, L.N Birla Debate, ICAI Debate, the Damayanti Shield Debate, and Sudhangshu Dasgupta Memorial Debate among others.

Ms. Moyuree Mukharjee is a 2nd year undergraduate student of Life Sciences at Presidency University, Kolkata.  She was awarded with fellowship to attend Difficult Dialogues as Student Delegate, London School of Economics Summit, Cidade de Goa and International Centre Goa on January 28 – 30, 2016. She was the Winner of Kolkata edition of Daring Debates, Television for the Environment (tv/e) in partnership with the South Asia Centre, London School of Economics and Difficult Dialogues, Oxford Bookstore, Kolkata, November 25, 2015. She received the best Speaker and Winner award for All India University Challenge Debate 2016, Calcutta Debating Circle on November 19, 2016.
